29 Nov Victory in Christ Church Regatta
The RPCBC (Regent’s Park College Boat Club) womens’ novice boat made history today by leading the college to victory on the river in the final of Christ Church Regatta.
The annual novice regatta saw the college defeat all the other colleges of the University in a staggered series of head-to-head races over the past four days.
Beating Pembroke, Christ Church, and Keble College in the initial qualifying rounds, the womens’ boat competed against University College in the quarter finals, Wolfson College in the semi-finals, and Wadham in the final. The final race was won by about a quarter-boat length, with other margins of victory being more significant.
The historic win, the first in the Boat Club’s history, was watched on the river bank by about half of the undergraduate body of the college and upwards of a thousand members of the public and other members of the University. The team was presented with medals and a commemorative plate by the Dean of Christ Church at a ceremony after the race, and then headed to the Collier Room in college for a drinks reception.
The Boat Club is exceptionally grateful to its sponsor, BlackRock Investment UK, and to its coach, Peter Bond for enabling this significant achievement to occur.
With thanks to Mark Barclay (current student) for photographs of the event.
