Date: 11/01/2021

Regent’s Park College is delighted to congratulate alumnus Professor Andrew Thompson (Modern History, 1987), who has been recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list for 2021.

Professor Thompson has become a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to research.

He is Nuffield Professorial Fellow and Professor of Global and Imperial History, and the co-chair of the Global and Imperial History Centre at Oxford, as well as the Chair of the UKRI Research, Innovation and Strategy Advisory Board. From 2015 to early 2020, he served as Executive Chair of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). His current research focuses on international humanitarianism and human rights and the emergence of the modern aid and development sector, which forms the subject of his forthcoming book Humanitariaism on Trial: How a global system of aid and development emerged through the end of empire (Oxford University Press).

Professor Thompson told the Oxford University news team that he was ‘very touched that his contributions to the AHRC and UK research and innovation over the last five years had been recognised in this way’.
