Giving thanks for the life of HM Queen Elizabeth II

Date: 8/09/2022

The community of Regent’s Park College, Oxford joins with the national and global expressions of grief at the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

We particularly offer our condolences to her family as they mourn their mother, grandmother, great grandmother and more.

We acknowledge the deep humility and unswerving commitment of her service to this country over so many years and her capacity to speak her Christian faith with kindness and clarity, and in actions as well as words.

In keeping with our dissenting heritage, we pray that as the nation gathers to tell the Queen’s story, we would also be gathered to mobilise in our work for goodness and peace. We think too of all who mourn, and we offer this prayer, written by the Baptist Union of Great Britain:

Gracious God,

We thank you for the life of your servant Elizabeth;
for her faithfulness to your gospel
through her words, example and humble service.

We remember with gratitude her gentle diplomacy,
her wise leadership and guidance in a changing world,
and the glimpses into her sense of humour.

She has been a gracious and godly Queen,
and so we commend her back to you:
May she rest in peace and rise in glory.

We pray too for the Royal Family
as they grieve a mother, grandmother, great grandmother,
especially for Charles as he becomes King,
and we lift up to you all in this country and across the commonwealth
in this time of national mourning and change.

Bless us with your peace, we pray,
today and always,
Amen.
