Dr Tim Middleton and Colleagues Awarded Funding for The Elisha Project

Date: 18/05/2026

Dr Tim Middleton, Regent’s Tutorial Fellow in Theology, Director of the Centre for Baptist Studies, and Director of the Visiting Student Programme, is part of a team at the Theological Colleges Environment Network (TCEN) to have been awarded funding by the ECLAS programme at Durham University.

The award follows an earlier project funded by ECLAS and hosted at Regent’s on Science and Religion in the Baptist World. ECLAS and the Science for Seminaries grant programme are funded by the John Templeton Foundation.

This new initiative, The Elisha Project, is being led by Dr Middleton alongside Dr Martin Hodson, Revd Margot Hodson, and Dr Grace Milton.

Running from January 2027 to January 2028, the year-long national project aims to resource and empower a new generation of environmental theology educators serving Theological Educational Institutions (TEIs) across the UK. The programme will bring together early-career theologians, church leaders, and scientists alongside more experienced practitioners through conferences, webinars, mentoring, and practical assignments.

Commenting on the award, Dr Middleton said:

“In the context of the current ecological crisis, this grant will provide the project team with vital resources for equipping teachers and ministers to think through, and act upon, different aspects of Christian ecotheology.”

Regent’s will host both opening and closing conferences for the project.

Further information, including details about how to get involved, is available in the TCEN press release. Additional information can also be found on the ECLAS website.
