Dr Pieter Francois is the new Professor of Cultural Evolution!

Date: 10/10/2024

We are delighted to share that Regent’s own Dr Pieter Francois has been appointed as Professor of Cultural Evolution by the University of Oxford. This prestigious appointment recognises Dr Francois’ outstanding contributions and dedication to cultural evolution and world history.

Dr Francois says:

‘I was thrilled to learn that the University gave me the title of Professor of Cultural Evolution through the 2024 Recognition of Distinction exercise. Above all, I see this as an endorsement of the work I have done over the past two decades in the twin fields of cultural evolution and world history and also as a recognition of the Seshat Global History Databank project I founded in 2011.’

‘My application was also centred around Regent’s Park College’s contributions to the wonderful and highly relevant degree of Human Sciences. I am grateful for the support I received both from Regent’s and the School of Anthropology & Museum Ethnography in developing my career. I am excited to be part of the new vision for Regent’s and contribute to this with my research and my teaching.’

After coming to us from St Benet’s Hall in 2022, Dr Francois quickly became an integral part of our academic community: he recently became Regent’s first Tutorial Fellow in Human Sciences. We are excited to see the continued impact of Dr Francois’ research and leadership, at Regent’s and beyond.

Please join us in congratulating Dr Pieter Francois on this well-deserved achievement. We are excited to have him as part of our new vision too!
