Following his award from the English Association for his book The Battle of Maldon, Dr Mark Atherton (Senior Lecturer in English) has now gained a joint award with colleagues Francis Leneghan and Kazutomo Karasawa for their edited collection of essays Ideas of the World in Early Medieval English Literature published by Brepols. Following an introduction by the editors summing up the period and its writing, fifteen essays by various specialists consider the history, geography, landscape, literature, culture, politics and theology of the period, showing that the island of Britain in the utmost corner of the world had a surprisingly rich literature covering many aspects of the world they lived in, which included cultural and mercantile contacts even as far as Jerusalem and India. The various writers in this volume explore attitudes to the world, to politics, to other people and peoples, and to empire building, long before the British Empire was ever thought of.
