Dr Mark Atherton wins the Beatrice White Prize

Date: 13/02/2023

Dr Mark Atherton, Senior Lecturer in English Language at Regent’s and an alumnus of the College has been awarded the prestigious 2022 Beatrice White Prize for his book The Battle of Maldon: War and Peace in Tenth-Century England (Bloomsbury, 2021) at the English Association.

The Battle of Maldon is a celebrated Old English poem about a bloody battle against Viking invaders that took place in Maldon, near the River Blackwater in Essex in 991 CE. In his book, in fact the first monograph study of the poem, Dr Atherton reveals how this poem commemorates ideals of loyalty, friendship and piety, and he brings to vivid life for the reader the people and places involved in the conflict.

The announcement by The English Association and a statement on the book by one of their committee members can be viewed on the award webpage:  https://englishassociation.ac.uk/the-beatrice-white-prize/.
