Launch of the Oxford-BNU Award in Creative Writing

We have pleasure in announcing the launch of the Oxford – BNU Award in Creative Writing. This new award is offered by the Mo Yan International Writing Centre, based at Regent’s Park College and inaugurated in June 2019 to facilitate international and cross-cultural diversity within the global literary community. It is named for 2012 Nobel Laureate Mo Yan, who is an Honorary Fellow of Regent’s Park College.

This Award is the latest of many initiatives dedicated to cross-global intellectual dialogue and exchange, with our partner Beijing Normal University. Uniquely, the Award is being offered in parallel competitions, held simultaneously in Oxford and Beijing. We are honoured to have Mo Yan serve as Chair of the Joint Judging Panels.

First Prize of £2,500          Two Runners’ Up Prizes each of £500                 

To be awarded for a short story of any format or topic, up to a maximum of 10,000 words written in English prose.

The piece must be the original work of any currently matriculated undergraduate or postgraduate student in one of the University of Oxford’s 44 Colleges or Permanent Private Halls. Both unpublished and previously published material will be accepted.

Submit your entry by 11.59pm BST on 31st August 2021, as both WORD and PDF attachments, with covering email stating your name and college, to pa_opgdc@regents.ox.ac.uk

Timeline:

  • Submission deadline: 31st August 2021
  • Shortlist from Organising Committee to UK Judging Panel: 4th October 2021
  • Final Decision and co-approval by UK/China Joint Judging Panels: 25th October 2021
  • Award Presentation live/online in Oxford and Beijing: 29th November 2021
