Date: 14/06/2024

Regent’s is delighted to announce that Israr Khan, a DPhil Law student at Regent’s, has been elected Oxford Union President for Hilary Term 2025.

Israr is both delighted and privileged. As he shares with us: “Being elected President of the Oxford Union is an absolute privilege. This historic institution has a rich legacy of fostering intellectual discourse and debate, and being chosen to lead it is a profound honour. It feels exhilarating to have the opportunity to contribute to this legacy and to play a role in shaping the conversations that will take place within these hallowed halls. It’s a responsibility I take very seriously, and I am filled with both excitement and a deep sense of duty to uphold the values and traditions of the Union.”

For over two centuries, the Oxford Union has been at the heart of university life, hosting an incredible array of speakers including Mother Theresa, Albert Einstein, Buzz Aldrin, Stephen Hawking and numerous world leaders. It is a history that he is excited to be a part of.

“What I will enjoy most about being the President is the opportunity to organize discussions on some of the most important issues of our time and to meet incredible people. Securing the presidency is not merely about holding a prestigious title; it is about the opportunity to shape significant discussions and bring diverse voices to the table. As President, I am committed to continuing the Union’s legacy of hosting groundbreaking debates and inviting a diverse range of speakers, from heads of state to thought leaders across various fields. The chance to facilitate these conversations and to learn from such a wide array of perspectives is something I am deeply passionate about and look forward to immensely.”

Israr is studying for a DPhil in Socio-Legal Studies, with a particular focus on Investor-State Disputes in China’s Belt and Road Initiative. As well as his close involvement in the Union, Israr enjoys playing an active role in the Regent’s community.

“My time at Regent’s has been instrumental in shaping who I am today. Serving as MCR President allowed me to work on significant initiatives for the MCR enhancing the experience for my peers and fostering a stronger sense of community. Moreover, the friendships and connections I’ve made here are invaluable.”

Israr follows in the footsteps of previous Regent’s students who have held the position of President of the Oxford Union, and we are sure that many more will follow. We wish him all the best and look forward to hearing more from him in the terms ahead.
