Kevin le Gendre is a British journalist, broadcaster and author, with a focus on black music, having published two well received books on its history Soul Unsung: Reflections On The Band In Black Popular Music (2012) and Don’t Stop the Carnival: Black British Music: Vol 1 from the Middle Ages to the 1960s (2018). He is also deputy editor of Echoes magazine and writes for a wide range of publications, including Jazzwise, MusicWeek, Vibrations, The Independent on Sunday and The Guardian. He has also done significant work on radio, including being a presenter on Radio 3’s J to Z and a contributor to Radio 4’s Front Row. Awarded Jazz Journalist of the Year at the 2009 Parliamentary Jazz Awards. The child of parents who migrated to Britain from Trinidad, he describes himself as being saturated by the music played at home during that childhood, including soca, calypso, soul and jazz. He now also teaches at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance
