I am a literary historian who teaches eighteenth- and nineteenth-century literature and culture. My research has special interest in the lived experience and material culture of marginalised and under-represented communities, and includes queer histories, histories of disability, histories of childhood, and histories of people of colour. I’ve published on topics including queer figures of the Georgian era, historical youth delinquency, and people of colour in Georgian Britain.
I have a particular affinity for collections-based research, which I currently conduct primarily for the National Trust, but have also collaborated on projects with literary/heritage institutions including the British Library, the Jane Austen House, the Charles Dickens Museum and the Dr Johnson House. My exhibition Mansfield Park: Courting Controversy was held at the Jane Austen House in 2024 and my exhibition The Austens at Oxford was held at St John’s College Oxford in 2025.
